The merchant vessel, "William H.Vanderbilt", transported lumber and iron ore across the Great Lakes for 17 years. During a furious storm in 1883, The vessel was driven aground and while all of the crew was saved, waves tore the vessel apart and pushed its remains to sink into deeper water.
